Schooling the Lawyers – Defacto Spouse Visa
Explore the option of a prolonged visitor visa in Hong Kong for de facto spouses and life partners not bound by legal marriage or civil partnership. This visa keeps non-traditional families together by granting a six-month stay, although it does not provide an ID card or residence status. Proof of a genuine relationship, often evidenced by previous cohabitation, is required. While the visa allows for family unity, it limits holders to visitor status, with no pathway to permanent residency. Exceptions for long-stay foreign nationals may exist, but these are rare and unverified. This visa also doesn’t apply to elderly dependent parents, catering solely to partners.
Once a year Stephen Barnes delivers a Continuing Professional Development seminar to the solicitors fraternity in Hong Kong which is accredited by the Law Society.
