What happens to your prospects for permanent residency in Hong Kong if you’ve been made redundant but have no firm intention to rejoin the workforce prior to  seeking to apply to have your eligibility for right of abode verified after 7 years continuous ordinary residence?

QUESTION

Hello Visa Geeza,

Thanks so much for this!

I have just been terminated from my job but my visa does not expire until July 29th of next year – will I have an issue when it expires?

Will I need a visa extended to cover the application process/time after the 29th?

Also my employer submitted to the IRD that I am leaving Hong Kong (long story) but I am not. How does that work? Would my visa still be active?

Finally, how long can I be away from Hong Kong for in order to still maintain my eligibility for right of abode in Hong Kong once the years are up?

I got made redundant last week and plan on travelling for a couple of months.

During this time I would like to travel for about 2 months (Nov / Dec) and maybe take a course for two months (Jan / Feb) – do you think that is doable?

My visa expires the day it turns 7 years for me – July 29th 2016.

Sorry for the many questions!

Please advise.
