What does side employment mean?

Side employment refers where a Hong Kong employment visa holder has secured the permission of his employment visa sponsor to work ‘on the side’ for another employer for a few hours a week. Often the Immigration Department are happy to approve this arrangement on the basis the side employment activity complementing the main employer’s business in some meaningful way. Side employment approvals are generally not forthcoming from ImmD if the rationale is simply to augment the employee’s full time salary income, nor where the main sponsor wishes to reduce the working hours of the full time sponsored employee in order to cut costs.
